I Machine Head si formarono nel 1992 ad Oakland per opera di Robert Flynn e Adam Duce .
Dopo un album d'esordio estremamente grezzo e ben riuscito, in perfetto stile trash metal, ed un secondo album (The more things change) pesante e lento,
la band statunitense cede ai suoni modalioli del numetal, sfornando 2 album anomali, che si discostano di gran lungo da cio' che erano inizialmente i Machine Head.
L'avvicinamento al numetal e l'allontanamento dal metal lo si puo' notare già nel "rinnovato" look di Flynn, che passa dal lungo capello nero e unto, ad un piu' che criticabile spazzolato-ossigenato.
Nonostante la crisi d'identità, The Burning red ha un buon seguito di pubblico. Ben diversi i risultati del seguente "Supercharger".
Il parziale fallimento della parentesi numetal e i continui cambiamenti di line-up, convincono i Machine Head a tornare sui suoni che hanno caratterizzato i loro inizi.
"Through the ashes of empires" e "The Blackening" sono due capolavori di potenza e tecnica e rilanciano la band nell'olimpo del metal moderno.
